The majority of denim brands are based on the coasts, creating trends and filtering styles out to those of us in the middle. Baldwin Denim is not in the majority.
Matt Baldwin founded the brand in Kansas City in 2009 out of an unmet need in the marketplace for an American-made denim brand with a modern design aesthetic using ultra-premium Japanese and American selvage denim. The brand has evolved with the introduction of a women’s line and a complementary collection, but it remains rooted in quality tailoring, durability, and a modern aesthetic. The entire collection is cut and sewn in America.
Last year, Baldwin KC opened, the second flagship in Kansas City and the first to carry the entire men’s and women’s collection, along with some incredible companion goods. The store is gorgeous, entirely modern, and as focused on attention to detail as Baldwin’s signature line, which features exceptional tailoring, premium colors and washes, and (my favorite) white rivets.
I don’t wear a ton of selvage denim – it’s typically a bit too much work for me. But Baldwin is one of the few selvage lines that I do enjoy wearing – the fit and construction is incredible, thus the jeans warrant a bit of extra care.
I’ve yet to make it to Kansas City, but a visit to this shop is now on my list. If you aren’t in Kansas City, you can shop Baldwin online, at Shopbop, or at Proper.
An enormous thank you to to Thea Volk for shooting the Baldwin KC store for TAE!
