S.W. Basics

Possibly one of my favorite aspects of TAE is learning how some of my favorite products and brands came to be. Last month, I had the opportunity to chat with Adina Grigore about her line, S.W. Basics, and I was especially lucky to be able to meet her at the American Made Market the next week (per usual, I overstayed my welcome and hung out for about an hour, trying to help sell product to the market-visitors!).  Adina is this amazing, hysterical woman (with incredible skin!) who is so committed and passionate about her work but also incredibly real and honest. I’ve been particular about what goes on my skin and focused on natural, effective products for the past several years, but my last corporate role focused on Consumer Product Goods (CPGs) and I was shocked at the green-washing tactics often employed in order to make consumers believe their chemical-laden products are natural and even good for them (it’s so sad how many consumers believe green packaging means a natural product!). I’m so thankful that there are people out there, like Adina and her team, who are committed to proving that products can be natural, simple, and affordable – while also incredibly designed and enjoyable to use. No trade-off necessary.

Adina Grigore started making her own skincare when she couldn’t find anything on the market that was gentle enough for her sensitive skin. With a background in wellness and nutrition, she knew what her skincare should be, but couldn’t find it, so she realized she’d have to make it herself.

After finding a solution, she started teaching workshops on how to make simple skincare products. After each workshop, students came up to her and asked her where they could buy her line. She realized that not everyone has the time or is willing to make their own products, but felt strongly that simple, natural products should be available and started S.W. Basics.

Adina’s goal for S.W. Basics is to educate consumers but also make them feel good about what they are buying. As consumers, we’ve been trained to buy items that are cheap and, in the case of skincare (and food), filled with artificial fillers. But it doesn’t have to be that way. People deserve better. We should all be able to go into a store and know that what we are buying is safe, good for us, and good for the economy.

S.W. Basics products are made with five ingredients or less and the belief that simplicity is better when it comes to skin care.

sw-basics-cotton-rounds-toner

My favorite S.W. Basics products – the toner and the organic, reusable cotton rounds! The idea for the cotton rounds came from an intern who was focused on living a waste free life – S.W. Basics found a way to provide a simple, organic and reusable solution.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DAY? YOUR WEEK?

We get tremendous emails every day from customers – people who are exactly where I was when I started and who love the products. This is motivating because as an entrepreneur, you know that you think your product is great, but you wonder if other people feel the same way. The idea that people would actually be upset if we stopped is incredibly encouraging.

We have a great team, and that is very motivating – they remind us to keep going.

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE ESSENTIALS?

A flannel plaid shirt – this is Brooklyn! Flip flops, way past the date they are technically allowed.

WHERE DO YOU ESCAPE?

South Florida – to the beach! We went to France for our honeymoon and loved it, but it really made us appreciate New York, so now we are trying to do more of the things that make New York an awesome place to visit.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED?

This is not even as bad as it’s going to get. What you are going through is normal and it’s not the worst thing you are going to go through.

Do you remember were six months ago? You were in a completely different place. Every small step is more meaningful than people give themselves credit for.  You will never arrive and be where you thought you’d be.

WHY DO YOU MAKE YOUR PRODUCTS IN AMERICA?

As you grow, the concept of local changes. From made by hand and sold at markets to manufactured and sold internationally. We don’t want to local-wash, but it is important. Products can be made ethically when manufacturing locally, because it’s easier to regulate production. Products should also be made close to the end consumer, because it’s important that they are fresh. Eventually all products should be localized, it’s sustainable, better for the environment, and better for the consumer.

The gorgeous S.W. Basics team!

Thank you Adina for making amazing products and for taking the time to speak with me!

[Disclosure: S.W. Basics sent me products for review. I have since purchased additional products and only share products and brands that I believe in.]

Shinola

Shinola (SHINE-ola, in case you were wondering! I was saying it incorrectly!) is a Detroit-based company that manufactures watches, bikes, and leather goods. Created by the founder and former leaders of Fossil Brands, Shinola’s goal is to reinvigorate quality manufacturing in America, and particularly in Detroit.

shinola-tribeca

I’ve been a fan Shinola for some time now –  hearing Heath Carr speak at the American Made Workshop and visiting the Tribeca flagship only solidified my support of the brand. Heath spoke about the power of communities, and how the founders of Shinola were attracted to Detroit because of the supportive entrepreneurial community that was forming within the city – people were taking ownership to make Detroit better, and they wanted Shinola to be a part of that. To build the company, the founders could have easily worked with top talent from anywhere in the world, but instead they chose to work within their community – finding the best talent for digital, video, etc. right there in Detroit.

Clearly, it’s a great story. A lot of product sells because of a great story. But Shinola is more than that.

shinola-tribeca-2

It’s an amazing experience. I was shocked by the size of the Tribeca store – you enter into an amazing, magazine-filled coffee shop where everyone is friendly (I’m from the Midwest – this stuff is important to me!), and then walk back into this gorgeous, two-story atrium of bikes and watches and leather goods galore. (Again, filled with really nice people… If I lived there, I’d want to be pals with the staff!)
shinola-watches

The products are all classic but thoughtfully designed. A lot of American-made products really play off of the “heritage” concept, and while I can appreciate that look, it’s not usually my taste. Shinola uses heritage materials, but balances them in a simple, modern way. These are legitimately “have forever” pieces.

shinola-piggy-bank

This leather piggy bank made me so happy. It didn’t come home with me, but I may have to do something about that soon. Although bicycles, watches, and leather goods are the brand focus, the shop also carries some jewelry, Detroit Denim, and other American made products.

shinola-office-supplies

Even more impressive? Shinola’s commitment to transparency. Transparency is a buzz word lately, which is fantastic and something I support wholeheartedly, but I’d also argue that gorgeously shot, well-lit (and pre-announced) photo stories detailing factory life are far from true transparency (although a great first step towards educating consumers!). Shinola is legitimately transparent – check out their factory livestream!

Odette New York

I’ve said before… jewelry should be personal. I’m partial to supporting smaller designers with my accessories, and it’s also important to me that each piece has meaning – a memory, a goal, an idea. I’ve always loved Odette New York because the pieces are so dynamic – delicate and feminine while simultaneously geometric and bold. When you wear an Odette piece, it’s obvious that a lot of attention has gone into the design… the way the rings fit, the way the necklaces lay just so…

About a month ago, Jennifer Sarkilahti emailed me to say she’d be visiting Minneapolis for a trunk show at Mille. Being the absolute dork that I am, I had a total fan-girl moment, jumped up and down, and emailed Matt to say, oh my God can you believe this?! It was a pretty big moment for me. Even better, last week I was able to visit Jennifer in her studio in Brooklyn and see how her beautiful pieces come to life.

I was a huge fan of Odette before, but meeting Jennifer made me fall even more in love. She personifies the vision I had of Odette… she’s incredibly kind and thoughtful, gorgeous in this totally unassuming way, and just so talented. It’s incredibly inspiring to see someone turn art into a business without losing the art – and Jennifer has done just that.

Thank you, Jennifer, for reaching out! and Michelle for connecting us! Read on to learn more about Jennifer and Odette, and if you are in Minneapolis check out the trunk show at Mille this weekend!

HOW DO YOU DESIGN YOUR COLLECTION?

I want to explore everything… I want to do all that I can. I don’t impose trend limitations on myself. I keep a running sketchbook and sticky notes next to my bed. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and sketch. When it’s time to design a new collection, I pull everything together and see what works.

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE ESSENTIALS?

Lots of black. So cliché New York! Lots of jewelry. I love stacking – I love that we are having a stacking moment! [note – I wish I had taken a picture of Jennifer’s amazing stacks… I keep thinking of them!]

I’m a minimal dresser with maximal jewelry. I also have a shoe weakness!

odette-ny-cuffFinished pieces and wax models displayed in the studio.

WHAT GETS YOU THROUGH THE DAY? THE WEEK?

I enjoy coming to my studio. I love it when all of the studiomates are here – it makes it a fun environment. Just the fact that we can make a living doing this every day makes it all worthwhile.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LINE UNIQUE?

Everything has been made by my hand initially, each mark is intentionally placed. The pieces are literally unique.

odette-new-york-studio each piece is handmade in wax (like a sculpture!) and then cast in various metals. the texture you see in these pieces is hand-carved by Jennifer.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Everything! I love to travel – it helps me clear my head because when I’m traveling, I’m not thinking about other stuff all the time. Museums, movies, books.

odette-new-york-inspiration-boardsuch a good inspiration board!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL? WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO NEXT

My favorite place is Bali… I’d love to explore India and South America next.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER DESIGNERS?

Just start making things. Don’t spin your wheels and be afraid to put something out there. Be really thoughtful, but don’t be afraid.

THANK YOU, JENNIFER! I loved meeting you and learning more about your line… and am so excited to add these or this to my collection on Saturday!

Maison du Soir

After years of sleeping in anything and everything that i could find/that was clean/that was soft, I finally realized it was time for me to get some new sleepwear. Like the rest of my wardrobe, I wanted fewer, better options – who wants to think about what to wear, to sleep?! The caveat – the sleepwear had to be comfortable, it had to be cute but not overwhelmingly so, and it had to be easy to care for. I went through multiple brands that were not quite right – too delicate, too warm, etc., before I discovered Maison du Soir. The sleepwear is incredible, of course, but, even better, designer Courtney has such a vision and is so passionate about what she is doing that I know the line will just get better. Read on to learn a little bit more about Courtney and Maison du Soir and then go check out the rest of her collection!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

In life…people’s unique stories and the idea that anything is possible.  Life can be harsh but it can also be so breath taking. In art…beautiful photography and that both the simplest and most complex emotions can be portrayed without speech.  In design…Contrasts …I love old mixed with new, soft and subtle with hard edges, blush pink with ink black, rose gold with black diamonds, pristine white walls with reclaimed wood.  I find beauty in simplicity and respect for things with a deeper meaning.

WHAT MADE YOU START MAISON DU SOIR?

I knew there was something bigger out there for me.  After establishing brands for companies I have worked for, it was time to make my own vision come to life.   I also found an appreciation of beautiful sleepwear and couldn’t figure out why it was so hard to find a quality sleepwear brand that was also fashionable.

maisondusoirsleepwear2

WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND MAISON DU SOIR?

The name Maison Du Soir is French for “House of Evening”…the use of “house” is an ode to the old European fashion houses and “soir” beyond it’s direct meaning, has a notion of party and fantasy in the word “Soiree”.   Beyond the name, the design inspiration started at common sense…why didn’t current sleepwear offerings echo our changing trends in daywear?  Why were the silhouettes boxy when my jeans were skin tight and my blouses flattering?  The collection is an attempt to bridge that gap.  It’s also an attempt to show people that they should be treating themselves as nicely when they go to sleep as they do when they go to work.  You shouldn’t be blog worthy by day and ragamuffin by night.

WHAT DRIVES YOU?

The stories of others who have started small and through hard work, have accomplished great feats.

WHAT MAKES YOUR DAY?

A good cup of coffee and good person.

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE ESSENTIALS?

Unique jewelry can make any plain outfit look that much better.  I’m a fan of K/ller jewelry.

maison-du-soir-sleepwear-4

WHAT IS NEXT?

Maison Du Soir growth…possibly unisex travel accessories and MDS for men. The boyfriend has asked for that next!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

I’ve learned that there are ups and downs in a new business.  You just have to weather the downs and remember the ups.  Hoping that next time you ask me what I have learned, I say “eventually the ups and downs even themselves out ”

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE HAS BEEN MOST HELPFUL TO YOU / WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER MAKERS?

“Don’t give up” covers a lot…if your factory sucks…find another one, if someone doesn’t like your product…take good notes (and then tell your BF they are stupid!), if you want to throw in the towel…don’t.  Sometimes you just have to focus on putting one foot in front of the other and that can truly help.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SHOP?

I shop my favorite brands in many different places and for unique pieces in boutiques.  Some of my best finds have been Court in NY and Satine in LA.

WHY DO YOU MAKE MAISON DU SOIR?

Because it’s something that I believe is missing and that women deserve.

maison-du-soir-sleepwear-grey-heatherWHY DO YOU MANUFACTURE IN AMERICA?

Because it’s home.  Simple as that.  You start where you feel most comfortable and my intention is to stay as long as America will have me. The ultimate goal is to give back to a place that has given so much to me.

WHY DOES MANUFACTURING IN AMERICA BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS?

It allows me quality control, to see the factory conditions first hand, reduces shipping fees, no duty fees and shorter leadtimes to name a few.

WHY IS MAISON DU SOIR DIFFERENT/SPECIAL?

It’s different because there is not much else out there like it.  It’s a sleepwear collection that echoes designer daywear style and aesthetic.  The pieces are designed with the intention to look as good in sunlight as they do in moonlight.

It’s special because it was born from a vision, a passion and an understanding of what could ease the pains of a difficult day.
